Despite the late arrival of the Haddington key holder, once the teams got onto the pitch and the match got underway it proved a worthwhile wait for both sets of players and supporters. Credit to all the players for a great game of football. From a Gullane perspective the teamwork again was very much in evidence which continues to please the coaches. Nevertheless, despite some great individual skill from Robbie, and direct running from Archie, the first goal seemed like it would never come until one of those mazy runs from Archie ended up with Jamie steering the ball into the net. It has to be said if it wasn’t for the home side’s keeper, Gullane could have had 4 or 5 before the 1st one arrived. As is the approach within the 2004 squad, we try to ensure players play in different positions to allow them to be more aware of the different aspects of playing in different areas. On that a special mention must go to Ella who played the forward role really well in the 1st game but who was also outstanding as a defender in the 3rd game. Not only her tackling but her passing out of defence and linking up with Shona was excellent. One of our other recent recruits, Harvey, showed some good skills with drag backs and turns which will in time lead to even more goals. Not to be left out Angus showed a willingness to get his head up and look for a pass – something the coaching staff are looking for more of from all the players. Arran continued where he left off last week, breaking up the opponent’s play and making good surging runs forward. A late call up for JJ saw him play in defence this week and his couple of matches there are showing signs of benefiting the team. Although not having a great deal to do during the match, Ali produced a save in the penalties that was something Craig Gordon would have been proud of – fantastic! Our goalkeeping coach thought that today was probably the best he has seen the team play. It would be hard to argue !! Well done to all the players (and the supporters)
Bring on next week !!
